2017 Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29

Take back the trail and show rocks and roots who's boss with Specialized's Rockhopper Comp 29er. Its big wheels, svelte A1-aluminum frame and SR Suntour suspension fork work together to turn once-formidable tech sections into smooth highways of loamy dirt. Other legit touches found on this rig include the reliable Stout rims, a slick 2 x 9-speed SRAM/Shimano drivetrain and hydraulic Shimano disc brakes that stop on a dime in even the nastiest conditions. You'll also dig the Specialized aluminum components and comfy Body Geometry saddle.

    Comments:

I've had this bike coming close to a year now, and it is a beginner bike and nothing more. I bought it to get started into mountain biking and once I started to figure out how to ride a bit, I started having issues and have advanced past it. I've had issues for months now with shifting. Gears don't want to change well, the chain slips off, and it sometimes feel like its due to the frame flexing while under high load while going up a hill. I am not a heavy guy either at 145lbs. The chain slaps around a lot. When I got the bike and went for a ride with some friends, they were surprised it slaps around so much. The brakes work well, but the limiting factor is the tires. The tires don't have a ton of grip and around some corners, they will wash out on you. The front fork doesn't do a good job of soaking both little bumps or bigger bumps. It really makes you work on trying not to crash when you are going quick on some sort of trail with some roots or bumps. I run more pressure than is expected for my weight, and the fork has come close to using up all the travel. I have tried adjusting the rebound but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I will say the lockout on the front fork is awesome. Going up a hill if you didn't see it coming with the lockout is a life saver. I have powered through hills on my bike where as my friends got left in the dust but then they fly by me once we are on top. I typically ride between 1 to 3 times a week, usually being no more than twice. When buying a bike, I was looking for a bike that was strong and reliable for me as a beginner so it wouldn't spend much time in the shop. This bike did not meet that hope like Village told me it would. I have bent a front wheel to where it was unrepairable, and Specialized does not make replacements, so you will be looking for a different one. Also, the pedals suck. They don't offer much grip and have found my shoes to have slipped off more times than I can count. The crank really could be stiffer.

      Comments:

Love this bike. I opted to upgrade to M396 brakes and a 180mm rear rotor. At 6'2" and 290, feels nice and tight to me. I'll be riding this bike for at least ten years, with maybe a fork and tubeless upgrade. I can't say enough good things about the folks at Bicycle Sport Shop on Parmer. They have made my experience getting back into mountain biking great.

Always been on the road before I purchased Carl. Love this thing, just point it and it goes where you want, without having to worry about surface. Found it surprisingly fast when needed and a great climber. Sits great and glad this in my rotation.

        Comments:

Great bike, but for the price I would expect a little higher quality front derailleur. The Acera rattles and rings right from the get-go. That's just a small complaint and an easy fix/upgrade. Other than that the pedals are pretty cheap so you can expect to upgrade those too.

Great bike for recreational and competitive mtn bike riders. I upgraded the tires to S-Works Fast Trak, Stan's No Tubes, and Shimano XT-770 cassette 11-34t. Future upgrades: Rockshox or Fox fork, XT Hollowtech Crankset, carbon handblebar, stem, and seatpost. Overall, a great, durable bike at a great price!!
